Funds in KMC fixed deposit to be spent on providing amenities

first_imgKolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim reiterated on Monday that funds in the fixed deposit of the civic body will be utilised only for development work and civic amenities and any wastage of such funds will not be tolerated.Replying to a query from Congress councillor Prakash Upadhyay regarding the existing amount in the fixed deposit of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) at the monthly meeting, Hakim said: “We have an amount of Rs 17.10 crore till February 2018. The funds in the fixed deposit, whether it is more or less, does not matter. What matters most is offering services and civic amenities to the people. Since the Trinamool Congress took over the board of the KMC in 2010, it has provided civic amenities in the form of potable drinking water, lights, development of slums, an overhaul of the drainage system, scientific plan for solid waste management etc.” According to Hakim, when Subrata Mukherjee of the TMC ended his term as the Mayor in 2005, the amount of fixed deposit stood at Rs 377.16 crore. When Bikash Bhattacharya of the Left Front board took over as Mayor, he sold a number of plots of land and the fixed deposit went up to Rs 721.25 crore. Hakim further informed that when Bhattacharya’s term as Mayor ended in 2010, he left Rs 588. 67 crore in the fixed deposit of the KMC. “The revenue earning is a part our job but our main aim is to ensure that the citizens get the best of amenities,” he maintained. The Mayor further said that the KMC has set a target of three years to ensure the supply of potable drinking water to every single pocket in the city. “There are problems in certain pockets, particularly in the added areas in the southern part, and we are taking all possible measures to augment water supply. The capacity of the Garden Reach Waterways is being raised by 25 million gallon and we are also constructing small booster pumping stations in these areas to boost water supply,” he added.last_img read more

While neither Oakland nor Kansas City has officially clinched the postseason, we currently give both teams a greater than 99 percent chance, and only one of them (probably the Chiefs) will make it in as the AFC West champion. Denver is still clinging to that second wild card spot, but their loss to the Titans in Week 14 set their chances back. They’ll now face a brutal end-of-season schedule, facing New England, Kansas City and Oakland. That number is rounded, but we use a little more precision when we determine the rankings, and Tampa Bay-Dallas is the (very slightly) more impactful game. Washington would miss the playoffs if the season ended today and would fall to having just a 1-in-5 chance of making them with a loss here. Green Bay31243310– 1. Detroit (9-4) vs. N.Y. Dallas is guaranteed a postseason slot, but if you choose an outcome to this game on our new NFL predictions page you’ll see that a win improves their chance of a first-round bye to 99 percent, and a loss drops them to 80 percent. This makes a huge impact on their Super Bowl probabilities, so the Cowboys — who are at risk of dipping into a quarterback controversy — have quite a bit to play for here. N.Y. But Detroit’s remarkable season has come against a pretty weak schedule, and they’ll have to wrap up the year against the Giants, Cowboys and Packers. The winner of this game would be nearly assured of a playoff spot, but the loser will be in decent shape. Green Bay, which is in the hunt for the NFC North, is rooting for the Giants. Tampa Bay, Washington, Atlanta and (somewhat surprisingly) Minnesota would prefer a Detroit win to improve their wild card standing. Tampa Bay54%85%42%43– With three weeks left in the NFL season, 11 playoff spots are open. That means that most of the remaining 48 games — save some stinkers like 49ers-Rams — will make some impact on the postseason. What are this week’s biggest games? For the last month, we’ve been using the model behind our 2016 NFL predictions to calculate how much each team’s playoff chances “swing” depending on the outcome of each game. For example, we currently give the Green Bay Packers a 31 percent chance of making the playoffs. If they beat Chicago this week, we project those chances will increase to 40 percent (independent of other games). If they lose, their chances drop to 11 percent.1Our NFL predictions are based on 100,000 simulations of the rest of the season and are updated after every game ends. In the simulations in which Green Bay beats Chicago, they make the playoffs 40 percent of the time. In simulations where they lose, they make the playoffs 11 percent of the time. But it’s unlikely that Green Bay’s playoff probabilities will be exactly 40 percent or exactly 11 percent at the end of Week 15, because the team’s chances depend on the outcome of several games, not just their own. The Packers’ current chances are much closer to 40 percent than to 11 percent because they are much more likely to beat the Bears (69 percent) than lose to them (31 percent). That’s a 29 percentage point swing! By doing this same math for every matchup and factoring in how each team’s resulting record will affect others’ playoff odds, we can find out which games are the most impactful. But “most impactful” only tells part of the story. Let’s say you’re a Green Bay fan, or a fan of any other team on the playoff bubble. Which set of outcomes would help the most this week? To help answer this question, we’ve updated our predictions page to allow you to pick the outcomes of every game for Weeks 15 through 17, so you can see how each matchup affects every team’s probabilities. In the “best case” scenario I could find for the Packers, they’d beat the Bears, but also Dallas would beat Tampa Bay, San Francisco would beat Atlanta, the New York Giants would beat Detroit, Indianapolis would beat Minnesota, and Carolina would beat Washington. With these six outcomes, Green Bay’s playoff chances rise to 58 percent. Go create your own scenarios! The five biggest games of Week 15 are below. Denver5452542– Tampa Bay5458508– Houston75537926– Denver54%33%78%44– Green Bay3135287– Minnesota1923176– AFFECTED TEAMCURRENTIF DET WINSIF NYG WINSSWING The Titans also control their own destiny! Wins against the Chiefs, Jaguars and Texans in the final three weeks will leave the Titans with a 10-6 record and an AFC South title. And yet, we give them just a 24 percent chance of making the playoffs. One reason for this is that this week’s matchup in Kansas City, where the Titans will be major underdogs by any measure. But it’s also possible that our ratings are understating the Titans’ overall strength. Elo carries over from season to season, and while most teams have shaken whatever effect 2015 had on their rating, Tennessee started in such a huge hole — their 2015 end-of-season rating was 1272 — that we’re still rating them as a significantly below-average team. A win in Kansas City would send their Elo, and their playoff chances, skyrocketing.CORRECTION (Dec. 15, 2:13 p.m.): A previous version of this article misstated the best-case scenario for the Packers in Week 15. In that scenario, the best outcome for Green Bay would be the Giants beating the Lions, not the other way around.Check out our latest NFL predictions. read more

Ohio State womens hockey to feature veteran leadership in 201213

After finishing 16-16-4 last season, Ohio State’s women’s ice hockey team is scheduled to kick off its 2012-2013 campaign this Friday with a handful of veteran players in new leadership roles. The team nominated senior forward Hokey Langan to be the Buckeyes’ team captain. The Chatham, Ontario, product is seventh on OSU’s career scoring list with 105 points thanks to 46 goals and 59 assists. Buckeyes Coach Nate Handrahan said choosing Langan to be the team’s captain was a pretty simple choice. “Girls look to her for leadership and she is a very talented player, has a lot of experience, knows a lot from playing in the level she played at prior to being here with international competition,” Handrahan said. Handrahan commented on Langan’s individual strengths. “I think her hockey IQ and knowing the game, but I think she bleeds scarlet and grey and wants to win,” Handrahan said. “I think that has to be at the crux of your leadership and she is willing to do what it takes to win.” Langan said she is happy that her team chose her to be its captain and thinks the team has confidence in her. “It was an honor and one of the goals I had set freshman year,” Langan said. “I like to say I am a leader and that my teammates respect me and have faith in me to bring this team wins.” Langan attributed her strengths to her teammates and her knowledge of the game. “My teammates make me a lot better than I am myself, but I like to say that I can read the ice really well,” Langan said. “I am a good passer when I am given an opportunity.” Langan, though, won’t be the only member of the Buckeyes in a leadership role this season. Senior forwards Paige Semenza, Tina Hollowell and Minttu Tuominen will serve as the three assistant captains. Semenza, a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete from Pittson, Pa., severed as assistant captain last season and said her new role is about having experience. “It was definitely honoring being an assistant last year and it gave me experience that I was able to build on,” Semenza said. “Coming into my senior year, I wanted to be a leader and help my teammates.” Handrahan said Semenza’s attention to detail is what makes her a qualified leader. “Paige is a quiet worker who pays attention to all the little details in her life and that helps her on the ice,” Handrahan said. Hollowell, a native of Clinton Township, Mich., was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete last season. Handrahan said Hollowell is the core of the team and inspires each player. “Tina is our heartbeat, our emotional leader, our warrior that inspires us to play well,” Handrahan said. Tuominen, a native of Espoo, Finland, is a former member of the Finnish National team and Olympic bronze medalist. Handrahan said the senior forward is an excellent leader. “Minttu is someone that has international competition and she is an Olympic medalist, obviously a talented player,” Handrahan said. Handrahan has not set any goals for the team but said he thinks the team has a good work ethic that will take them far. “I think this team can work hard and compete,” Handrahan said. “The potential for good things is there but we won’t really know until we drop the puck on Friday.” The Buckeyes will host its season opener against Lindenwood at the Ohio State Ice Rink on Friday at 7:07 p.m. read more

Ministry Of Health To Lead CleanUp Exercise In St Catherine Communities On

Speaking at the launch of the clean-up day at the St. Jago Park Health Centre in the parish on Wednesday (February 18), Acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Winston De La Haye, underscored the importance of personal responsibility in preventing mosquito breeding. “This isn’t an issue that the Ministry of Health alone can solve. It is the responsibility of each individual to identify sites where water settles and get rid of it. Remember that a drop of water is enough for the mosquito to breed in. We need to punch holes in cans and get rid of all of the bulk waste that is unnecessary and can potentially collect water,” he said. He informed that similar activities will take place in other parishes, and highlighted the importance of communities undertaking clean-up exercises.“This isn’t a one-day event. We are starting with areas in Spanish Town and Portmore and we are encouraging all Jamaica to come on board. We are expecting that after Saturday persons will be active in their communities and in their homes destroying breeding sites,” he said. The team, which includes Ministry of Health personnel, vector control workers, stakeholders and partners, will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at Portmore Pines Plaza from where persons will be deployed to the two Portmore communities. The group will move into the Rivoli community at about 1:00 p.m.Other partners in the clean-up effort include the Ministries of Education and Local Government and Community Development; and the national response team, which comprises the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Social Development Commission (SDC). “It is a multi-sectoral affair,” Dr. De La Haye said. “No one Ministry is able to address the situation. Zika isa preventable illness and we need to do everything we can to get the mosquitoes out of the way,” he pointed out.Dr. De La Haye is inviting members of the public to join the effort, noting that special focus would be placed on the gathering of bulky waste for removal by the NSWMA.last_img read more

Magazine Deals Difficult Not Impossible

first_imgWith big magazine deals like Reed Elsevier’s divestment of Reed Business Information up in the air and ABRY Partner’s sale of Cygnus Business Media still hanging in the balance, there’s no disputing that the tightening global credit markets have made media M&A a challenging landscape to navigate.“The credit crunch makes it difficult to borrow the money necessary for a lot of deals and the economy’s downturn is worrying a lot of buyers,” said DeSilva + Phillips managing partner Reed Phillips. “Magazine companies that are for sale are showing downward financial results in the fourth quarter of 2008 and buyers are worried about 2009.”But while observers watch the Reed and Cygnus deals as industry bellwethers, the difficulty these deals have faced shouldn’t suggest, however, that magazine deals are “impossible” to get done. “For magazines that are holding their own and/or growing and are profitable, there is without a doubt  a strategic buyer audience out there,” said Scott Peters, a managing director at media broker firm the Jordan, Edmiston Group. “It’s not a good time, though, to be selling products that need heavy financing. Many of the acquisitive platform companies are taking a transaction hiatus because of their own leverage and own debt facilities.” Sellers Need to be ‘Attractive’An economic recession makes diversification of revenue streams vital, said Oakstreet Media CEO and former VSS managing director Tom Kemp. ”Magazines that are leaders in their verticals, serving markets with long term growth will continue to attract buyers, but at lower multiples,” he said. “Buyers are primarily looking at non-advertising supported media such as subscription information products that have lower volatility in tough market. Also, trade shows continue to be attractive to buyers.”Traditional print publishers need to build out their online offerings, including social network products. According to Phillips, digital sales should make up 15 to 30 percent of a publisher’s overall annual revenue.Kemp agrees: “Publishers need to cross the digital divide so that growth of revenues from digital outpaces the decline in print revenue.”According to JEGI’s Peters, the highest-growth categories right now fall into four core buckets: consumer online (“big growth with lots of interest”), b-to-b online (“smaller than consumer, but growing nicely”), interactive marketing (“one step removed from magazines but has high deal flow”) and database information (“driven by subscriptions, data analytics and mission-critical information”). “The average revenue multiple for pureplay consumer magazine companies is 1.1X and average EBITDA multiple is 8X,” said Peters. “For online consumer companies, the average revenue multiple is 4.1X and EBITDA is 21.2X. That’s huge.” The same goes for b-to-b companies, he said, with an average revenue multiple of 2.1 and average EBITDA multiple of 9X for pureplay companies and online companies seeing average multiples at 3.4X and 13.5X, respectively.According to FOLIO:’s 2008 B-to-B CEO Survey, smaller publishers saw e-media grow by one percentage point to 9 percent in 2007, while larger publishers say e-media on average accounted for about 13 percent of their total revenue last year. On the consumer side, e-media is the fastest growing revenue stream for both large and small consumer publishers (according to FOLIO:’s 2008 Consumer CEO Survey), accounting for 6.4 percent of revenue for larger publishers and 9.1 percent for smaller publishers.Be Flexible, Open to Creative ThinkingIn this rollercoaster economy, sellers should be flexible with their asking price. “When M&A markets become challenging, the sellers are always the last to receive the memo and acknowledge that their business is worth less,” Kemp said. “The severity of the current economic crisis has served as a wakeup call to sellers that the market has changed dramatically.”Indeed, buyers and sellers are now finding new ways to get deals done. One prime example, however extreme, was Macrovision’s sale of TV Guide to Beverly Hills, California-based investment firm OpenGate Capital for $1—less than half the cost of a single copy of the magazine. On top of that, Macrovision agreed to will loan OpenGate up to $9.5 million at 3 percent interest.Another, said Peters, is AMI’s sale of its defunct supermarket tabloid Weekly World News to a group of New York investors called Bat Boy LLC, which said at the time it would expand the brand online and by licensing its “characters” into television and film.“There is a lot of thinking going on right now about taking offline brands online and creating new business models.”last_img read more

Wont stoop low even to deny allegations CJI Ranjan Gogoi

first_imgChief Justice of India Ranjan GogoiIANSChief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi was accused of sexual harassment by a former court staff member on Friday, April 19, in an affidavit. The 35-year-old woman submitted the affidavit to the respective residences of 22 judges of the Supreme Court, in which she alleged that the current Chief Justice was inappropriate with her, and had her removed from her post when she did not reciprocate. The incidents occurred in October 2018.The woman mentioned separate incidents where she allegedly encountered the CJI when she was working at his residential office. In an exclusive carried by The Quint, a senior lawyer said, “Her entire family has been harassed, victimised and intimidated. Thereafter false criminal cases have been lodged against her. So there is relentless intimidation and victimisation that is going on not just to silence her but to also punish her. She has narrated everything supported by documents.”Replying to the allegations levelled against him, the CJI said in a statement that he would not stoop so low to even deny the charges and that less than 10 hours were given to him to make a statement. In his statement, Gogoi replied, “I don’t think that this can be of a plot of a junior assistant. There is a bigger plot. They want to deactivate the office of the CJI. Independence of judiciary is under very very serious threat. If the judges have to work under these conditions, good people will never come to this office.” According to Bar and Bench, he asserted, “I will sit on this Bench and discharge my duties without fear and favour till my tenure is over.”The Chief Justice then defended himself to the “citizens of the country and stating that this pillar of democracy is “under serious threat” but he will continue working. He also added, “They cannot catch me on money, so they have brought up this. This is the reward a CJI gets after 20 years and a bank balance of Rs 680000. Independence of judiciary under very very serious threat. I had to tell this from the judicial seat.”Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General of India, said that the matter should be “taken very very seriously”. The Supreme Court held an emergency hearing on the morning of April 20, Saturday after the sexual assault charges were levelled against Gogoi. A notice was issued by the top court reading, “Take notice that a special bench consisting of the Hon’ble chief justice of India, Hon’ble Mr Justice Arun Mishra and Hon’ble Mr Justice Sanjiv Khanna is being constituted to have a special sitting at 10:30 AM today i.e. the 20th April 2019 in the Chief Justice’s court to deal with a matter of great public importance touching upon the independence of judiciary, on a mention being made by Shri Tushar Mehta, Ld.
