DETROIT — Beer drinkers can’t claim blissful ignorance for much longer.Starting next month, packages of Bud Light will have prominent labels showing the beer’s calories and ingredients as well as the amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein in a serving.Bud Light is likely the first of many to make the move. The labels aren’t legally required, but major beer makers agreed in 2016 to voluntarily disclose nutrition facts on their products by 2020.Many brands, including Corona Light, Guinness, Heineken and Coors Light, already have calories and other nutrition information on their bottles or packaging. But it’s in small type, or hidden on the bottom of the six-pack, and ingredients aren’t listed.Bud Light went with a big, black-and-white label, similar to the ones required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on packaged foods. At the top, Bud Light lists its four ingredients: water, barley, rice and hops. Below that, it shows the calories in a 12-ounce bottle or can (110) and other facts. Bud Light contains 2 per cent of the recommended daily amount of carbohydrates, for example.“We want to be transparent and give people the thing they are used to seeing,” said Andy Goeler, vice-president of marketing for Bud Light.Individual bottles and cans of Bud Light won’t have the full labels, but they’ll continue to have some nutrition information printed in small type.Goeler said the brand’s research shows younger drinkers, in particular, want to know what’s in their beer.“They have grown up really in tune to ingredients,” he said.Goeler said he didn’t know when other brands owned by Bud Light parent Anheuser-Busch — including Michelob and Stella Artois — would adopt bigger nutrition labels. But the question is: Will such labels make a difference in the choices consumers make? At least one study suggests they won’t.Researchers at Cornell University and Louisiana State University tracked what happened when diners were given menus with calorie counts. It found that diners who knew the calorie counts ordered lower-calorie appetizers and entrees, but the calorie counts had little impact on orders for drinks and desserts.John Cawley, an economics professor at Cornell and one of the authors of the study, said diners seemed to respond most to information they didn’t already know. They were probably surprised by the calories in some appetizers, for example, but already knew the general range for a glass of beer or wine.Cawley said it’s telling that a light beer would be the most forthcoming about its ingredients and nutrition information. Bud Light’s sibling, Budweiser, has 35 more calories and four additional grams of carbohydrates, according to the brand’s website.Ultimately, the biggest changes may come from manufacturers themselves, not consumers, Cawley said. Since nutrition labels were first required in the early 1990s, companies have competed to look healthier or remove objectionable ingredients like trans fats.“That is actually the biggest public health victory of all,” Cawley said.Dee-Ann Durbin, The Associated Press
The Consulate General of Italy in Kolkata and the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, New Delhi, in association with The Calcutta School of Music recently presented Recital Italiano – a piano recital by the legend Luciano Bellini, conductor and pianist – showcasing works by Italian composers. The performance was experienced by the classical music lovers of the city.Luciano Bellini performed his masterpieces like, G Verdi Romance sans paroles Valzer in Fa Mag; R Leoncavallo Canzonetta; G Puccini Piccolo Valzer; G Rossini Un rêve to name a few. The musical pieces played in the first part of Recital Italiano were his rare compositions which were done in the 19th century by Opera composers: Verdi, Rossini, Puccini and Leoncavallo. In the second part, he played the pieces composed in the 20th century, especially for the revival of instrumental music which had been neglected because of the supremacy of Opera.

While neither Oakland nor Kansas City has officially clinched the postseason, we currently give both teams a greater than 99 percent chance, and only one of them (probably the Chiefs) will make it in as the AFC West champion. Denver is still clinging to that second wild card spot, but their loss to the Titans in Week 14 set their chances back. They’ll now face a brutal end-of-season schedule, facing New England, Kansas City and Oakland. That number is rounded, but we use a little more precision when we determine the rankings, and Tampa Bay-Dallas is the (very slightly) more impactful game. Washington would miss the playoffs if the season ended today and would fall to having just a 1-in-5 chance of making them with a loss here. Green Bay31243310– 1. Detroit (9-4) vs. N.Y. Dallas is guaranteed a postseason slot, but if you choose an outcome to this game on our new NFL predictions page you’ll see that a win improves their chance of a first-round bye to 99 percent, and a loss drops them to 80 percent. This makes a huge impact on their Super Bowl probabilities, so the Cowboys — who are at risk of dipping into a quarterback controversy — have quite a bit to play for here. N.Y. But Detroit’s remarkable season has come against a pretty weak schedule, and they’ll have to wrap up the year against the Giants, Cowboys and Packers. The winner of this game would be nearly assured of a playoff spot, but the loser will be in decent shape. Green Bay, which is in the hunt for the NFC North, is rooting for the Giants. Tampa Bay, Washington, Atlanta and (somewhat surprisingly) Minnesota would prefer a Detroit win to improve their wild card standing. Tampa Bay54%85%42%43– With three weeks left in the NFL season, 11 playoff spots are open. That means that most of the remaining 48 games — save some stinkers like 49ers-Rams — will make some impact on the postseason. What are this week’s biggest games? For the last month, we’ve been using the model behind our 2016 NFL predictions to calculate how much each team’s playoff chances “swing” depending on the outcome of each game. For example, we currently give the Green Bay Packers a 31 percent chance of making the playoffs. If they beat Chicago this week, we project those chances will increase to 40 percent (independent of other games). If they lose, their chances drop to 11 percent.1Our NFL predictions are based on 100,000 simulations of the rest of the season and are updated after every game ends. In the simulations in which Green Bay beats Chicago, they make the playoffs 40 percent of the time. In simulations where they lose, they make the playoffs 11 percent of the time. But it’s unlikely that Green Bay’s playoff probabilities will be exactly 40 percent or exactly 11 percent at the end of Week 15, because the team’s chances depend on the outcome of several games, not just their own. The Packers’ current chances are much closer to 40 percent than to 11 percent because they are much more likely to beat the Bears (69 percent) than lose to them (31 percent). That’s a 29 percentage point swing! By doing this same math for every matchup and factoring in how each team’s resulting record will affect others’ playoff odds, we can find out which games are the most impactful. But “most impactful” only tells part of the story. Let’s say you’re a Green Bay fan, or a fan of any other team on the playoff bubble. Which set of outcomes would help the most this week? To help answer this question, we’ve updated our predictions page to allow you to pick the outcomes of every game for Weeks 15 through 17, so you can see how each matchup affects every team’s probabilities. In the “best case” scenario I could find for the Packers, they’d beat the Bears, but also Dallas would beat Tampa Bay, San Francisco would beat Atlanta, the New York Giants would beat Detroit, Indianapolis would beat Minnesota, and Carolina would beat Washington. With these six outcomes, Green Bay’s playoff chances rise to 58 percent. Go create your own scenarios! The five biggest games of Week 15 are below. Denver5452542– Tampa Bay5458508– Houston75537926– Denver54%33%78%44– Green Bay3135287– Minnesota1923176– AFFECTED TEAMCURRENTIF DET WINSIF NYG WINSSWING The Titans also control their own destiny! Wins against the Chiefs, Jaguars and Texans in the final three weeks will leave the Titans with a 10-6 record and an AFC South title. And yet, we give them just a 24 percent chance of making the playoffs. One reason for this is that this week’s matchup in Kansas City, where the Titans will be major underdogs by any measure. But it’s also possible that our ratings are understating the Titans’ overall strength. Elo carries over from season to season, and while most teams have shaken whatever effect 2015 had on their rating, Tennessee started in such a huge hole — their 2015 end-of-season rating was 1272 — that we’re still rating them as a significantly below-average team. A win in Kansas City would send their Elo, and their playoff chances, skyrocketing.CORRECTION (Dec. 15, 2:13 p.m.): A previous version of this article misstated the best-case scenario for the Packers in Week 15. In that scenario, the best outcome for Green Bay would be the Giants beating the Lions, not the other way around.Check out our latest NFL predictions.
Swansea have already found their new manager after the relegation from Premier League earlier in May. Carlos Carvalhals successor will be a two time winner of “Manager of the Year”According to Wales Online, It will be Graham Potter from the successful Swedish club Östersunds, who will become the new manager. According to the news site, Potter will fly to Wales shortly after the Allsvenskan-game against BK Häcken later tonight. But the Östersunds CEO Daniel Kindberg refuses the fact that Potter is leaving.“It’s clear that we have a shortlist if Graham leaves. A meeting for Skyview Middle School and River City Academy students and families will be facilitated by the school principals on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:00pm, at Skyview Middle School. Pegge Erkeneff, Communications Liaison with KPBSD: “To retain essential elective offerings for 9th-12th grade students in Soldotna, and ease the teaching position reductions caused by a potential rise in the Pupil-Teacher-Ratio (PTR), this move will create an economy of scale that will lessen the amount of staff reductions and allow for more core and elective offerings for Soldotna 9th – 12th grade students. The consolidation and school move will result in a savings to the district of approximately $630,000.” Erkeneff: “The district office will work with Mr. Graham to determine other site administration duties and other staff allocations and duties. A plan will be developed to address equipment and supplies from both buildings, and communications with staff, students, parents, and the community.” Tony Graham will continue to be principal of the consolidated Soldotna High School. This savings would come from reduced building operations and personnel costs to operate the current building housing two schools.
The Brave browser logo Stephen Shankland/CNET It’s time for browser startup Brave to see if this whole privacy-respecting ads business is really going to pay off.The startup, co-founded by former Firefox leader and Mozilla Chief Executive Brendan Eich, got its start by releasing a browser in 2016 that blocks ads by default — a design the company’s studies say dramatically improves not just performance but also cuts memory usage and saves phone battery life. But the plan was never just to remove ads — it’s also to replace the ones you usually see on websites with something that doesn’t track you around the web. Brave started testing these privacy-respecting ads this year, and now the technology is active in the main version of Brave for personal computers. And if you opt in, you’ll get a share of the resulting ad revenue.”Ads have become spyware,” Eich said, and ad tech is riddled with middlemen and fraud that are problems for both advertisers and the publishers who place ads. “We think we have a better technique.”Brave has convinced 5.9 million people to use its browser each month and should reach 10 million this summer, Eich said. That’s a far cry, though, from the billion-plus who use Google’s dominant Chrome and the 264 million who use Firefox. To fulfill its ambitions of “putting chlorine in the pool” — building an improved ad system extending far beyond its own company — Brave will need a lot more users to sign up.And privacy protections, while important, historically have been a tough sell for consumers. Recent privacy scandals and data breaches may have changed your mind, though, and Brave has a carrot to coax you aboard.Ad revenue for Brave usersWith this first phase of Brave ads, you’ll keep 70% of the revenue. A second phase, involving cooperation with website publishers, will give you 15 percent of each ad’s revenue. It won’t generate enough for you to get rich quick, but Eich hopes it’ll be enough to help sustain free sites on the internet. The system will expand to Android and iOS phones in coming months.Disclosure: I transferred some bitcoin into my Brave wallet for testing when Brave launched its payments system in 2016. That later was converted into BAT. After that initial purchase, Brave’s grants, BAT from ads I’ve seen and BAT transferred to website publishers, I now have a BAT balance worth $26.59. I have received no bitcoin or BAT from Brave.Conventional online ads can generate more revenue for publishers if they’re targeted toward a specific audience. Nobody likes irrelevant ads. But that targeting can involve a privacy tradeoff, since advertisers want to know about what sites you’ve visited or what your social media profile says about your interests.Brave Software wants to show targeted ads, too, but it lets the browser decide on the targeting without spilling your data over the network to publishers, advertisers or Brave itself. It gauges your interest chiefly by the content of websites you visit — for example, news articles. But it also will include what can be a very strong signal that you want to buy something: searches for products or services.Small text-based search ads are how Google got its start making immense piles of money. Brave ads right now are similarly terse, but instead of being built into the website, they appear as operating system notifications. And unlike with search ads, you get 70 percent of the Brave ad revenue. Internet You won’t get rich off Brave adsSo how much could you earn in Brave’s monthly payout plan?Enlarge ImageIf you enable Brave’s ad system, you’ll see pop-up notifications and earn 70% of the resulting ad revenue. Screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET “I’m still a bit of a bear, so I say $5, but it could be $10 or more,” Eich said. Just seeing an ad generates a little money, but clicking generates more, and doing something very valuable to an advertiser, like booking an appointment to test-drive a car, could be worth something more like $50, he said. One catch: You get paid in Brave’s crypto-tokens, called basic attention tokens (BAT), not real money. Another catch: for now, the money goes into the browser, but the only way to get it out is to use the Brave Rewards system to contribute that BAT to websites, YouTubers and Twitch videogame streamers you visit who’ve signed up for the Brave system. Later, Brave will let you export your tokens so you can convert them to regular money.”We don’t currently have a way to get tokens out,” Eich said. “We will add that as soon as we can,” using partnerships with cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase and Uphold and requiring a fraud-thwarting process that means users must identify themselves, he said.Brave advertisers include Vice, Home Chef, ConsenSys, Ternio BlockCard, MyCrypto, and eToro, BuySellAds, TAP Network, AirSwap, Fluidity, andhttps://uphold.com/Uphold, Brave said. The browser periodically retrieves a catalog of ads from such advertisers and shows its best guess about the one it calculates will be most interesting to you. Advertisers know only that their ads were seen, not who saw them. Brave is designed to show them during moments when you won’t be as bothered by the interruption.Publisher ads, set to arrive later this year, will place Brave ads directly onto publishers’ websites. There, publishers will keep 70%, while you and Brave will evenly split the remaining 30%.Brave also could sign a larger-scale search-ad deals with search engines to boost revenue further, Eich said. “We have a model that gets us to profitability.”First published April 24, 9 a.m. PT.Update, 12:39 p.m. PT: Adds a disclosure about the $26.59 value of the author’s BAT holdings. Members of the marching band New Edition perform at the annual Labor Day celebration at Baltimore’s Cloverdale.Baltimore’s Cloverdale neighborhood held its annual Labor Day Basketball Challenge with basketball, music and a strong sense of community. The event started off years ago as a simple basketball game between old and young members of the community challenging each other to a game in 1957. That has transformed into what took place on Sept. 7; a celebration for all people to participate in.“The event became an annual affair and it’s evolved to what we have here now,” said Earl Garner, president of Cloverdale Athletic Club and Basketball.Garner helped lead the “Ring of Brotherly Love” during the morning as members of the community held hands and said a prayer.Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke (District 14) were some of the participants to show support of the community coming together and moving forward, Garner said.“There’s so much focus around separation when it comes to African Americans in this town,” he said. “There’s a lot of separation but we can still show people that we are still a community and we can still come together.”Community support like that displayed by Michael Mann, a participant for all 46 years, who continues to come back because he hopes he can help guide the youth.“I haven’t played basketball in the last 20 years but I went out to play with them because I saw a lot of new faces,” said Mann. Each year he returns to the Labor Day Basketball Challenge because he believes the event helps foster the young people and that they can listen to their elders, Mann said.“Baltimore is a basketball city so you have a lot of kids who are into the game. It draws a lot of people,” Mann said. The event also included free food and music from the marching band, New Edition, a band with over 75 members of many ages. One of the members of the band, D’Shira Plummer, also spoke about the importance of hosting community events in the neighborhood because of the impact they had on young people.“I think it’s important because it keeps our kids off the streets,” said Plummer. “It’s something positive. Less kids off the corner and more of them being productive.”The Labor Day Basketball Challenge brought in over 200 residents, Garner said, including people from outside Baltimore.Tommy Lyons, a Morgan State University student, visited the park along with his son and grandson in order to enjoy a game of basketball.“Folks are coming together and we need that—especially after the riots. Anything that can bring this community together and make it feel organic is what we need in Baltimore,” said Lyons.
