Mens Soccer Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor to take on No 21

Credit: Casey Cascaldo | Photo EditorComing off a 0-0 draw at home against Northwestern on Friday while playing nearly half the game down a man, the Ohio State men’s soccer team  (1-5-2, 0-1-1 Big Ten) heads to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take on the Wolverines (5-1-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten) on Tuesday. Ohio State redshirt senior midfielder Brady Blackwell said even though Ohio State’s battles with Michigan are mostly noted on the gridiron, the rivalry transcends all sports between the two schools. “I think everyone comes here because they know about the rivalry in football obviously, but I think it carries over to every single sport, so we’re not very fond of them,” Blackwell said. “They don’t really like us very much.” The Wolverines come into this week ranked No. 21 in the nation, according to the United Soccer Coaches Poll, and are on a six-game unbeaten streak following their only loss of the season, at home to Tulsa on Aug. 24.Michigan is a team that is both effective and dangerous on offense. The Wolverines have outscored their opponents 15-5 on the season while outshooting them 101-48. The Wolverines’ attack is spearheaded by sophomore forward Umar Farouk Osman’s four goals and two assists, combined with eight points apiece from junior forward Jack Hallahan and sophomore forward Mohammed Zakyi.Meanwhile, the Wolverines are just as strong between the pipes, with sophomore goalkeeper Henry Mashburn currently holding a 0.68 goals against average for the season, accompanied by four clean sheets.“Michigan’s very good this year, very athletic, tough and they get after you,” Ohio State head coach Brian Maisonneuve said. “It’s going to be a battle and we’re going to have to match their fight because you know they’re going to come out a hundred miles per hour.”Maisonneuve said that a top concern of his is how his players will recover on such short rest following the tough double-overtime battle against the Wildcats Friday night in Columbus. “The hardest part about double overtime on Friday is we’ve got to turn around and do it on Tuesday, so it’s going to be a really quick turnaround,” Maisonneuve said. “Managing bodies is going to be the No. 1 thing.”With eight games under their belt, a new coaching staff and system and a whole lot of soccer left to be played, the Buckeyes seem to be settling in.The defense rebounded from a tough outing at Penn State last weekend to shut out Northwestern on Friday despite being a man down, while the offense played its most effective game of the season last time out. The Buckeyes and Wolverines are set to play in Ann Arbor at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. read more

Official Sevilla sign Marko Rog on loan from Napoli

first_imgSevilla have completed the loan signing of Napoli midfielder Marko Rog until the end of this season. The 23-year-old midfielder joined Napoli for a reported fee of €13m in 2016 from Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb on a five-year deal and has since managed 67 appearances in all competitions.Under new coach Carlo Ancelotti, however, Rog has only started four of his 11 games this season at Napoli. This had prompted talk of a move to Spain with Sevilla, despite reported interest from German side Schalke 04.Speaking in a press conference last week, Ancelotti confirmed that Rog will likely leave Napoli in this month’s transfer window with Sevilla president Jose Castro announcing on Monday that a deal was close to being completed.“We’ve made two quality signings [in Munir El Haddadi and Max Wober] and there’s another [Rog] who has just landed in Seville. We hope to close a deal for him tomorrow,” Castro told Diario de Sevilla.“It’s good proof of this club’s ambition to build a more competitive team and fight for all the objectives we have in front of us.”Now Sevilla have confirmed the news of Rog’s arrival but made no mention of an option to buy him at the end of his five-month loan deal.“Sevilla FC and SSC Napoli have reached an agreement in principle for the loan of Marko Rog until the 30th of June 2019,” read a statement on the club website.Jose Mourinho, Lionel MessiMourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach. The transfer brought up quite the little scandal in Spain after Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli vowed to take Spanish news outlets to court after being falsely quoted as saying that Rog will leave them for Sevilla earlier this month. However, the Croatian has now begun training at Sevilla and will be hoping to put his troubles from Italy behind him at Andalusia. It’s uncertain yet whether Sevilla manager Pablo Machin will select him in the squad that will face Barcelona in the second leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final clash on Wednesday night.Los Rojiblancos hold a 2-0 aggregate lead over the cup holders and will need to avoid losing the return leg by more than two goals to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.📸 Rog arrived in time to take part in his first training session with #SevillaFC. 🇭🇷⚽️Here’s how the session went ➡️ https://t.co/5zbh7L0O6w#vamosmisevilla#WeNeverSurrender 💪❤️ pic.twitter.com/6vsrBgGWnV— Sevilla FC (@SevillaFC_ENG) January 29, 2019last_img read more

MPs get Tk 60b election budget

first_imgThe Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has sanctioned nearly a Tk 60 billion project for the members of parliament (MPs) to construct madrasas in their respective areas. However, the next general elections will possibly be held by the end of this year. Each MP will get funds to construct at least six madrasas in their constituencies. The total project will cost Tk 59.19 billion, which will totally be funded by public money. The project will have separate funds for construction of 200 more madrasas.A similar project was sanctioned before the 5 January 2014 general elections, which was basically an extension of a project of 2010. Each of the MPs then received Tk 200 million. The ECNEC on Tuesday sanctioned the project named ‘Development of selected Madrasas’ at a meeting presided over by prime minister Sheikh Hasina. As many as 1,800 madrasa buildings will be constructed across the country under the projects. The names of the madrasas have already been finalised as per the choices of the MPs.According to the project, if any MP wants to build any other madrasa, he/she will get money from the extra allocation. The ECNEC sanctioned three other similar projects for the MPs in the last year. The projects were passed for constructing new schools, renovation of old school buildings, and construction of mosques and temples. The four projects including the latest one will cost the government Tk 224.7 billion in total. Apart from that, each of the MPs received nearly Tk 30-50 million every year in the last one decade.Asked about the matter, local government expert Tofael Ahmed said this is a violation of the election rules. Allocating money through projects ahead of elections is sheer injustice.“Generally, the education ministry’s vocational and madrasa departments are responsible for this kind of works. But, MPs are now doing this. It’s not right,” he added. When asked if it will have an influence on the voters as the salaries of the madrasa teachers are given by the government though Monthly-Pay-Order (MPO), planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, “It will definitely affect the elections. The projects have been taken for people,”“We have already told the secretaries that don’t let the development works be hampered during the elections,” he added. There are 9,311 madrasas in the country, said the minister adding that only three of these madrasas are funded by the government while remaining ones are being run privately.last_img read more

Dolphins have ability to sense electrical signals

Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. In a new study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers reveal the discovery of how the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, is able to sense electric fields of prey in the water using structures found on the animals head.center_img Explore further While electroreception is often seen in fish and amphibians, it is not common in mammals. As a matter of fact, until this new research, the only mammal to show the ability to sense electric fields was the platypus. The researchers, led by Wolf Hanke from the University of Rostock in Germany studied some rare captive Guiana dolphins at a zoo in Muenster, Germany. When examining the rostrum of the dolphins, or the forward part of the head that contains the jaw, the researchers noticed small depressions. When one of the dolphins died, the researchers examined these depressions and found that they are crypts and hold whiskers when the dolphins are in the womb. These whiskers later drop off after the dolphin is born. It had been assumed these were just the depressions left after the whiskers were gone, but the researchers believed they were somehow still aiding the dolphin’s senses.Turning to the remaining dolphin in captivity, the researchers trained the dolphin to rest it’s head on a platform fitted with electrodes designed to deliver electrical signals into the water. When the researchers delivered a signal, the dolphin was rewarded if it swam away. If there was no signal, the dolphin was rewarded for staying in place. To prove that the signal was indeed being sensed through these crypts, the researchers then fitted the dolphins with a plastic shield that covered the crypts. With the shield in place, the dolphin did not move regardless of whether an electrical signal was present or not.The Guiana dolphin is similar to the more commonly known bottlenose dolphin but lives off the east coast of South America. Similar to other toothed cetaceans, the Guiana dolphin hunts and locates prey using echolocation, or sound waves. While echolocation is good for finding prey from a distance, it does not work well at close range. The Guiana dolphin routinely feeds at the bottom of the ocean where the water can be very murky. It is here that the researchers believe that electroreception comes in handy. The researcher’s next plan is to examine other dolphin species to see if they too have the same ability.
