$108m for HIV prevention projects

first_img27 November 2009South Africa has secured an additional US$108-million (about R818-million) from the Global Fund to finance its HIV prevention projects over the next five years, which Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe says has come at the right time, given the current financial environment.“This is very important for us as we try to mobilise additional resources for our response to the epidemic,” said Motlanthe, who is also chairperson of the South African National Aids Council.Motlanthe was addressing a plenary session of the council in Pretoria this week.National strategic plan reviewThe funding was made available after South Africa’s application to the Global Fund under a submission entitled “Leveraging partnerships to achieve the objectives of the national strategic plan”.Delegates attending the session were also briefed on the preliminary findings of the midterm review of the plan – the country’s blueprint to combating HIV/Aids.“This review took place alongside a United Nations led review of the health sector’s HIV programme as well as an analysis of our state of readiness to conduct mass counselling and testing,” Motlanthe said.He said the review focused on progress towards achieving the key objectives of the plan as well as the institutional arrangements at national, provincial and local levels to implement the plan“We acknowledge that the review team had a short timeframe to conduct the review and that a bit more work needs to be done to finalise the report,” he said.Challenges, HIV/Aids treatmentThe report found that while levels of knowledge about HIV are high, behaviour change remained a challenge. “Condom use has increased but we need to increase the consistent use of condoms significantly,” Motlanthe said.Regarding treatment, he said more than 700 000 patients were receiving treatment, but that the figure represented only 50% of those who need to be treated. The review found that the health system needs to be strengthened to ensure increased access to care and for services to be integrated with within the public health sector and between the public and private health sectors.“We really need to ensure that we mobilise and align all our resources to meet our targets. There are also challenges with regard to information about the epidemic. We collect lots of data but do not use the information intelligently to monitor progress,” Motlanthe said.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Cosmos Returns, To The Satisfaction Of Billions And Billions

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting kelly schwarze Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#Cosmos#PopSugar Tech#science Related Posts center_img Editor’s note: This post was originally published by our partners at PopSugar Tech.“The day someone says ‘Let’s stop exploring,’ we might as well move back into the cave, because that’s where we’ll land,” astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson told us in regard to why his latest project, the return of science show Cosmos, is such an important milestone for TV, and Americans as a whole. It’s been 33 years since Carl Sagan’s Cosmos: A Personal Voyage first aired on PBS and turned viewers’ sights to the infinite universe, and the upcoming Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey picks up where its predecessor left off, focusing on the story of the universe, and making these concepts accessible to a mainstream audience with a taste for Hollywood-style special effects.Cosmos has left such an impression even decades after its initial release due to the format of the show. It “wasn’t simply opening up science books and teaching pages ripped from it,” Neil said during a Comic-Con press session. “It spent time learning, exploring how to make science matter to you as a human being, as a citizen, as a species with a capacity to reflect upon its own existence.”The new Cosmos comes with a renown science and entertainment pedigree, counting Ann Druyan, co-writer of the first Cosmos series alongside her late husband Carl Sagan, as a writer, along with director of photographer Bill Pope, known for his work in the Matrix trilogy, producer Brannon Braga, a Star Trek: The Next Generation alum, and Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane as an executive producer. The involvement of a comedian known for his crass jokes may seem surprising, but with his influence at Fox, Seth was the driving force behind bringing Cosmos to its 8 p.m. Sunday night spot beginning February 2014 on the network, and has included references to the original show in an episode of Family Guy. In fact, Ann recounted a conversation with Seth in which he told her that with the exception of this parents, no two people besides herself and Carl have had as much influence on his life. It’s with the big studio backing, that the show is able to include blockbuster-scale visual effects that blend “graphic novel”-style animations with space photos provided by NASA, and virtual sensations. As seen in the trailer above, Neil travels with viewers through locations in the universe. An impressive scene Brannon said they’re still working on shows “Neil on Mars, but as seen through the point of view of a rover. It’s following him around and handing him a rock, doing all this cool stuff.”Bringing the story of space and time is a deep passion of all those involved we spoke with during Comic-Con, which all but guarantees it gets translated to the show. “I have high expectations that it will change the mood of the country, so people will come to value science,” Neil said. Based on the crowd that greeted Neil, Ann, and Brannon during the Cosmos panel in one of Comic-Con’s biggest event rooms, the Indigo Ballroom, it’s a passion many viewers will hold as well. The group was met with standing ovations both when they entered and exited the stage, showing a fan base to rival the Hollywood mainstays in Hall H, and seemed ready to take on science exploration. For more from the Cosmos panel, check out this recap, complete with typical Neil deGrasse Tyson humor:Images via Kelly Schwarze and GettyMore stories from PopSugar Tech:A Victorian-Era Lomo Lens For a Modern SLRSeason 2 Secrets From the Boys of Orphan BlackMatt, Jenna, and Steven on the New Doctor, TARDIS Magic, and Who’s Next to LeaveWho Are the Guardians of the Galaxy?Doctor Who at Comic-Con Reveals His “Darkest Days” in 50th Anniversary Preview 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

Harnessing the Awesome Power of Social Media

first_imgThis work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. Hi, AleXA time or two we’ve thrown around this big term: generative capacity — a big term, yes, but one that you should not find intimidating. What it means is that all the interaction taking place within online media is churning out insights and knowledge at rates and volumes we couldn’t have imagined even a generation ago. It’s intimidating for countless millions of people, and, no doubt, you’re one of them.Take heart, AleX. These changes present you with a huge opportunity to serve your clients in even better ways. How? By organizing this information to ensure it’s more accessible for your clients. However, to tap into all this power, you’re going to have to master a couple of skills – beginning with curation. Yes, content curation is a big term, but don’t let that term spook you.  It simply means presenting information in ways that your audience will find useful.Aggregation 101:The first step toward curation, AleX, is learning how to take an inventory of all that’s available. Experts have a lofty term for this too — aggregation — but don’t let it intimidate you.   Simply defined, aggregation in this context means collecting online sources of information that your audiences will find useful. There’s a wealth of places to find this information.  You could start with online newspapers and magazines. Blogs and Twitter feeds are good sources too. Bookmarking services such as Delicious and StumbleUpon are good references as well.Google Alerts, which offer a whole array of convenient options to search and filter content, are excellent resources also. Here’s an archived webinar that explains how to get information to come to you using Google Alerts, Creating your own Learning Network.Curation 101:Now we come to the next step summarized by another big word — curation — but don’t let that one throw you either.Within a social media context, curation simply means presenting information in one or more forms that your audiences will find useful.Blogs offer a great way to curate information.  Simplicity is the first rule of thumb.  Keep your blogs short  — ideally, no more longer than 400 words — as well as easy to understand, and to the point.   The subject matter needs to be tightly focused on a simple theme. Break up the text under headers , which make reading a lot easier. For example, a blog may include a brief description of a problem or challenge, a few real-life accounts to support your basic theme, and links to other informative blogs or online newspaper or magazine articles.Capitalizing on What You’re Already DoingWe mentioned bookmarking services as a creative source for collecting — or aggregating — information.  Consider reverse engineering this idea…in other words, use bookmarking services as a way to curate links to your blog.Facebook and Twitter are also excellent places to curate your information. Always remember that your challenge is assuring that your material stands out in the dense news feeds that characterize both Facebook and Twitter.Needless to say, this calls for some creativity. Preface what you post with some attention-grabbers.Adding ValueUnderstand, though, that harnessing the power of social media doesn’t have to be limited to aggregating and curating content. You can harness this power on behalf of your clients simply by helping focus on and refine online discussions, and when the need arises, correcting faulty information.Granted, mastering this skill presents yet another professional challenge, but there is some good news in all of this.  Your professional training and your passion for your job have uniquely equipped you to tap into this awesome power — more important, they have equipped you with the abilities required to help your audiences profit as fully as possible from all this information. So, take heart, AleX. This is part of the “Hi, AleX” series — advice to AleX NetLit about enhancing her levels of network literacy through day-to-day personal and professional social networking. I’m still not prepared to say something to be honest,” Klopp told a press conference. “How I deal with things like that is usually; my door is not always literally open, but it’s always open if somebody wants to talk.”As long as they don’t talk to me, it doesn’t really exist!”But that Alberto is not happy with not having too much minutes, it’s obvious. The more important thing is he never shows it in any training sessions, he’s a fantastic professional and trains really well when he can.”The last couple of weeks he has had back problems and that kept him out of a lot of sessions. Yesterday was the first session it looked 100 per cent good again. That’s all.” last_img read more
