Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram An anti-Greek protest was held in Ankara on Wednesday, when a group of Turkish nationalists gathered outside of the Hellenic Embassy. The “Morality Foundation for Art and Science” claimed that their rally was a response to the Golden Dawn burning a Turkish Flag in Athens last Sunday. The protesters were holding banners, one of them bearing the Kemalist slogan of the 1922 war “We will throw the Greeks again into the sea.”“We want to make it known to the world that we, as young Turks, will give the toughest response, if necessary, against racist and fascist approaches aimed at the Turkish Republic,” said the group’s leader, Mustafa Gunes, echoing the Turkish government’s request for the arrest of the flag-burners.“We will do everything we can to prove that we will even give our lives to protect and maintain our flag that our dead heroes have held with their blood. We declare that we will rouse the people if necessary.”
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, January 25, 2018 – Nassau – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Peter K. Turnquest tabled the Travelers Currency Declaration (Amendment) Bill 2018 in the House of Assembly, Wednesday, January 24, 2018. DPM Turnquest explained that the Amended Bill seeks to tackle several issues by stating clearly what travelers must declare to Customs officials in The Bahamas. An updated Customs Form will reflect the changes to be made, which includes declarations for currency or other negotiable instruments or precious metals or precious stones. Items not declared will either be detained or forfeited as items not declared. However, the property cannot be detained for more than 72 hours after seizure unless a magistrate orders its continued detention for a period not exceeding three months from the date of the original detention or seizure. The DPM also defended this present Government Administration’s handling of the Financial Services Industry particularly the domestic banking sector in particular of bank closures.“What we see today is the continuation of a trend that has been happening now for several years. Unfortunately, it is a global trend as more and more banks because of the availability of technology, are taking advantage of that technology to reduce their costs.“Reducing their costs unfortunately means that some of them are moving to an electronic banking platform, requiring less brick and mortar locations, and as a result less bodies.”He said the Bahamian people have not been prepared to benefit or to adapt to the new technology and new reality; and this Government has been trying to take advantage of new technology through the Commercial Enterprises Bill, the efforts being taken in Grand Bahama to create a tech hub, and the promotional tour that the Prime Minister is on in Austin, Texas trying to develop interests in The Bahamas as a tech hub.“Although we are late, we are trying to help our people are adapt to this new reality — even as we talk about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and how they are going to affect the way we do business, how monetary policy is determined and controlled.”DPM Turnquest also explained that the Government does not control the closure or consolidation of banks, but it is preparing and putting in place strategic plans on how it is going to address the evolution of the banking system.“I do not want to get ahead of the Prime Minister (Dr. the Hon. Hubert Minnis) as to what are the plans for the domestic financial industry and how we intend to make provision for these communities that have all of a sudden become unbanked.“We want to extend our reach into communities that have been under-served or not served for years and how we need to rationalize the web shop phenomena and these electronic payments and again all of the crpytocurrencies that are popping up. You will hear more about those kinds of things and how we intend to address them from a technological point of view and a future vision point of view.”He said that in Bimini, the Government encouraged the Bank of The Bahamas to open there as well as Exuma. The Government also encouraged another Bahamian bank to go into Spanish Wells.“We are doing the best that we can, but we do recognize that is not necessarily the best and the most financially wise approach, because it does [require] additional costs, and in a lot of these communities the cost of business outweighs the benefit.“But we have to understand that we have a moral obligation also. So we will continue to do the best that we can for these under-served communities to the extent where we can encourage the Board of the Bank of The Bahamas to look at these communities to see whether they can justify establishing branches in either part-time or off-days, or whether full-time,” the DPM said. With big magazine deals like Reed Elsevier’s divestment of Reed Business Information up in the air and ABRY Partner’s sale of Cygnus Business Media still hanging in the balance, there’s no disputing that the tightening global credit markets have made media M&A a challenging landscape to navigate.“The credit crunch makes it difficult to borrow the money necessary for a lot of deals and the economy’s downturn is worrying a lot of buyers,” said DeSilva + Phillips managing partner Reed Phillips. “Magazine companies that are for sale are showing downward financial results in the fourth quarter of 2008 and buyers are worried about 2009.”But while observers watch the Reed and Cygnus deals as industry bellwethers, the difficulty these deals have faced shouldn’t suggest, however, that magazine deals are “impossible” to get done. “For magazines that are holding their own and/or growing and are profitable, there is without a doubt a strategic buyer audience out there,” said Scott Peters, a managing director at media broker firm the Jordan, Edmiston Group. “It’s not a good time, though, to be selling products that need heavy financing. Many of the acquisitive platform companies are taking a transaction hiatus because of their own leverage and own debt facilities.” Sellers Need to be ‘Attractive’An economic recession makes diversification of revenue streams vital, said Oakstreet Media CEO and former VSS managing director Tom Kemp. ”Magazines that are leaders in their verticals, serving markets with long term growth will continue to attract buyers, but at lower multiples,” he said. “Buyers are primarily looking at non-advertising supported media such as subscription information products that have lower volatility in tough market. Also, trade shows continue to be attractive to buyers.”Traditional print publishers need to build out their online offerings, including social network products. According to Phillips, digital sales should make up 15 to 30 percent of a publisher’s overall annual revenue.Kemp agrees: “Publishers need to cross the digital divide so that growth of revenues from digital outpaces the decline in print revenue.”According to JEGI’s Peters, the highest-growth categories right now fall into four core buckets: consumer online (“big growth with lots of interest”), b-to-b online (“smaller than consumer, but growing nicely”), interactive marketing (“one step removed from magazines but has high deal flow”) and database information (“driven by subscriptions, data analytics and mission-critical information”). “The average revenue multiple for pureplay consumer magazine companies is 1.1X and average EBITDA multiple is 8X,” said Peters. “For online consumer companies, the average revenue multiple is 4.1X and EBITDA is 21.2X. That’s huge.” The same goes for b-to-b companies, he said, with an average revenue multiple of 2.1 and average EBITDA multiple of 9X for pureplay companies and online companies seeing average multiples at 3.4X and 13.5X, respectively.According to FOLIO:’s 2008 B-to-B CEO Survey, smaller publishers saw e-media grow by one percentage point to 9 percent in 2007, while larger publishers say e-media on average accounted for about 13 percent of their total revenue last year. On the consumer side, e-media is the fastest growing revenue stream for both large and small consumer publishers (according to FOLIO:’s 2008 Consumer CEO Survey), accounting for 6.4 percent of revenue for larger publishers and 9.1 percent for smaller publishers.Be Flexible, Open to Creative ThinkingIn this rollercoaster economy, sellers should be flexible with their asking price. “When M&A markets become challenging, the sellers are always the last to receive the memo and acknowledge that their business is worth less,” Kemp said. “The severity of the current economic crisis has served as a wakeup call to sellers that the market has changed dramatically.”Indeed, buyers and sellers are now finding new ways to get deals done. One prime example, however extreme, was Macrovision’s sale of TV Guide to Beverly Hills, California-based investment firm OpenGate Capital for $1—less than half the cost of a single copy of the magazine. On top of that, Macrovision agreed to will loan OpenGate up to $9.5 million at 3 percent interest.Another, said Peters, is AMI’s sale of its defunct supermarket tabloid Weekly World News to a group of New York investors called Bat Boy LLC, which said at the time it would expand the brand online and by licensing its “characters” into television and film.“There is a lot of thinking going on right now about taking offline brands online and creating new business models.”

US President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with senior military leaders at the White House in Washington, DC on Monday. Photo: AFPUS President Donald Trump was poised Tuesday to decide on possible military action against the Syrian regime, after vowing to respond “forcefully” to the latest alleged chemical atrocity in the country’s bloody civil war despite strong warnings from Damascus-ally Russia. The United States, backed by Britain and France, has said it is ready to act with or without support from the United Nations, where the Security Council was to vote as early as Tuesday on rival US and Russian proposals to probe chemical attacks in Syria.Trump met his cabinet and then dined with top generals Monday, telling reporters “we have a lot of options militarily and we’ll be letting you know pretty soon… probably after the fact.”Washington and Moscow set out starkly different positions at a stormy emergency session at the UN Security Council, where Russia’s ambassador Vassily Nebenzia warned that the possibility of US military action was “very, very dangerous.”Nebenzia rejected a US call for the world body to set up a probe to identify the perpetrators of what rescuers called a “poisonous chlorine gas attack” late Saturday in the enclave of Douma, near Damascus. But US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the “world must see justice done.”“History will record this as the moment when the Security Council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of Syria,” Haley declared.Diplomats said the United States was pushing for a vote on Tuesday on its draft resolution setting up a Syria gas attacks inquiry, but Russia could veto the measure.Trump slammed the “horrible attack” and vowed to respond “forcefully.”“We’re going to make a decision tonight or very shortly thereafter,” he told reporters.Rescuers and medics in Douma say more than 40 people died after the suspected poison gas attack in the last rebel-held pocket of the one-time opposition stronghold of Eastern Ghouta.Access to the area, which has faced weeks of regime bombardment, is limited and AFP has not independently verified the accounts. In April last year, Trump launched a cruise missile strike against a Syrian air base after a previous chemical weapons attack UN monitors later pinned on Bashar al-Assad’s regime.‘Very dangerous’The punitive raid did not draw US forces any deeper into Syria’s civil war, nor did it dissuade Syria or its Russian and Iranian backers from pursuing their campaign against rebel groups. And any new action raises the risk of open conflict with Russia which, like Iran, has deployed forces to defend Assad’s regime.Nebenzia, reflecting earlier warnings from President Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin, said: “From what we hear now, I am afraid they are looking for a military option, which is very, very dangerous.”Earlier, Trump was asked whether Putin bore some of the responsibility for the latest attack. “Everybody is going to pay a price. He will. Everybody will,” the American president warned.Washington’s main European allies stood by reports blaming Assad.Trump spoke to France’s President Emmanuel Macron for the second time in two days over the alleged attacks, with the pair expressing a “desire for a firm response from the international community to these new violations of the chemical weapons ban,” according to the Elysee Palace.British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson spoke with the acting US secretary of state and, according to London, they agreed that “this attack bore hallmarks of previous chemical weapons attacks by the Assad regime.”As the UN debate took place, a huge blast tore through a multi-story building in the jihadist-held city of Idlib, in northern Syria. The cause of the explosion was not immediately apparent, but the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 13 people had been killed and another 80 wounded.Investigation launchedThe Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said it was investigating the Douma attack allegations, but that so far only a “preliminary analysis” had taken place.Syrian regime forces have carried out an offensive against Ghouta since February 18 that has killed more than 1,700 civilians and cornered rebels in their last holdout of Douma. After capturing most of Ghouta, Syria and Russia secured two negotiated withdrawals last month that saw 46,000 rebels and civilians evacuate.Following fraught negotiations and a regime bombing blitz, state media announced Sunday a deal for Jaish al-Islam to leave Douma within 48 hours and release hostages.A group of detainees arrived in Damascus overnight Monday to Tuesday after being freed by Jaish al-Islam, state news agency SANA said.In a parallel operation, 65 buses carrying fighters and civilians left the outskirts of Ghouta and headed to northern Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

They allegedly carried out three grenade attacks in Srinagar, in which four persons were injured. The attacks were carried out within four hours in 1-km, targeting facilities of Aircel, Vodafone and government-run BSNL.In the first attack, two unidentified men barged into the office of Aircel at Karan Nagar, located less than 300 metres from Zonal Police Headquarters, at 11.30 am and asked the staffers to vacate the premises, police said.
