M. Dogliotti College of Medicine as an alternative designated center of WACP, with oversight by WACP representatives from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, while the Membership Exam was administered in Accra, Ghana. The exams are the first to be administered to Liberia’s residents of postgraduate medical residency training by WACP authorities since the LCPS was established in 2013.The Primary Exam is a test in the basic sciences of anatomy, pathology, physiology and pharmacology. The candidates are expected to show an understanding of the subject matter and demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge to the practice of medicine.A total of 19 residents from the departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics took the exams. It is well noted that 5 out of the 9 doctors from the Internal Medicine Department were successful representing 56% of the passing rate, while 4 out of the 10 from the Pediatrics Department passed, representing 40% of the passing rate.Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Wachekwa, a Liberian resident doctor at LCPS has acceded to the membership of WACP. He is one of the two resident doctors who travelled to Ghana to sit the WACP membership exam and passed, which constitutes a 50% passing rate.Commenting on the overall results, WACP lauded the LCPS president, the support team and the residents for making the maiden WACP Exams in Liberia a huge success. Also commenting on the WACP results, authorities at the LCPS described them as good, considering that the general passing rate for countries that have more experience and expertise than Liberia is 35% – 50%.Meanwhile, the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) also lauded the outstanding performance of the resident doctors.LMDA added, “The age old wisdom says that hard work always pays off in life and you all have proven that it holds true even today.”The doctors who passed the Primary Exam from the Department of Pediatrics included Drs. Benetta Andrews, Hawa Sonii-Koon, Yuah A. Nemah and Charles Oguni, while those from the Department of Internal Medicine are Drs. Joyce Bartekwa, Cozie Gwaikolo, Varbah Paye, Philip Ireland and James Korvieh. The LCPS commenced administering its maiden membership exams on June 5, 2017.The exams are being administered at the main teaching hospitals in Monrovia. The college is modeled after the WACP and the exams pattern will reflect similarly for easy reciprocity later as LCPS grows. In its efforts to improve national health outcomes, the Government of Liberia established the LCPS in 2013.The purpose is to administer a graduate medical residency program to train medical specialists to independently manage surgical and medical cases in Liberia. LCPS currently has 47 medical doctors training in 4 specialty areas, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and General Surgery. A new medical residency program in Family Medicine is expected to start in July.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
