Heartwarming: Photo of Kane Williamson consoling Carlos Brathwaite hit among World Cup fans

first_imgLife came full circle for Carlos Brathwaite on Saturday. 3 years after breaking the hearts of quite a few English fans by hitting 4 sixes in the World T20 final against England at Eden Gardens, Brathwaite was at the receiving end in West Indies’ World Cup 2019 match at Old Trafford in Manchester.Carlos Brathwaite came up with a single-handed effort and took West Indies close to New Zealand’s total of 291 in their crunch World Cup 2019 match. West Indies were reeling at 164 for 7 after a middle-order failure but Brathwaite, who had picked up 2 wickets earlier on Saturday, wasn’t willing to give up.The big West Indies all-rounder, who hadn’t been in the best of form in the lead up to the World Cup, played with the typical West Indian flair and gave New Zealand a massive scare.Brathwaite hit 101, including 9 boundaries and 5 sixes, in just 81 balls, thereby bringing up his maiden World Cup 100. West Indies needed just 5 from 7 after the Brathwaite heroics but the all-rounder holed out at long-on when trying to seal the win with a big hit. Trent Boult at long-on held on to a stunning catch.West Indies fans were visibly distraught. Brathwaite sunk to the ground at the middle of the pitch in disappointment. The former champions’ chances of qualifying for the semi-final took a huge hit after the 5-run loss. However, a moment of fine sportsmanship from New Zealand players, especially Kane Williamson, is being cherished by cricket fans on social media.Williamson quickly walked up to Carlos Brathwaite and consoled the West Indies star who gave it his all at the field. Earlier in the day, Williamson had hit 148 from 154 balls to lead New Zealand’s fightback.advertisement ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: New Zealand players console Carlos Brathwaite after West Indies’ 5-run loss on Saturday (Reuters Photo)Most heartbreaking yet heartwarming picture on the Internet today #NZvWI #Brathwaite #KaneWilliamsonSwathii (@curlssup) June 22, 2019This….this is why I love this game. (@vikas_musafir) June 22, 2019Speaking to the press after his valiant effort, Carlos Brathwaite said he was devasted at not being able to take West Indies past the finish line in Manchester.”Obviously, I’m devastated not to get over the line. I thought it had enough bat on it. I was willing it to go up and up and up but that was one of the best fielders [Trent Boult] in the world out there,” Brathwaite added.”It’s a game of margins. One or two yards more, we would have been victorious tonight,” he said. Also Read | Devastated not to get over the line, says Carlos Brathwaite after New Zealand heartbreakAlso Read | MS Dhoni suggested a yorker before hat-trick ball, says Mohammed ShamiAlso See:last_img
