6 min read August 19, 2015 Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Have you ever met someone at an industry happy hour, hit it off, talked about things work and non-work, and then had a mini freakout when it came time to exchange contact information? Should you give this individual your work email address? Your business card? Your personal cell number? Your Twitter handle? Should you find each other on Facebook? What if you give your cell number and she gives you her email? Awkward. That’s the problem a new app called Knock Knock wants to solve. The app, which launches today for free on both Apple and Android devices, allows a user to instantly connect with a nearby user by knocking on his own phone twice. Within the app, users choose what information, from Facebook to Instagram to phone number to email addresses to Snapchat names, they want to share and with whom.If a group of people who all have the app want to be connected, one person needs to open the app and everyone else needs to knock twice on their phone to connect with everyone else in the group. You can share different information with different members of the group. For example, you can choose to give the guy to your left your personal cell number, but the lady to your right, you only want to have your professional Twitter handle.Users can chat within the app either as a group or individually.Another function of the app is location sharing. By logging into the app, you can see who else is near you and simultaneously broadcast your location to other users.Click to EnlargeRelated: How to Network When You’re an IntrovertKnock Knock is the work of the Humin co-founders, Ankur Jain and David Wyler, and it builds upon the infrastructure of the Humin augmented reality network, which organizes all of your contacts based on when you met them, where, with whom, with relevant images and social media handles. In addition to giving users an awkwardness-free, business-card-free, data-entry-free way to exchange contact information, Knock Knock also lets users know who from their contacts is nearby.Knock Knock and Humin are both built upon the premise that technology is only going to get more and more omnipresent in our lives and that it also, eventually, Internet connectivity will be embedded in every corner of the globe and within every possible device.“The question is how do you provide value-added services to people in a world where you are not locked behind a screen like this but where it is augmented everywhere. And the only way to provide that is not to have all the information everywhere you go, because that would be overwhelming, but it is knowing what information is relevant to you, the specific individual, and when,” says Jain. “The only way you can do that, I believe, is understanding the context of how you relate to the things around you.”Jain and Wyler, who met in college and built the elite, global entrepreneur network Kairos Society for people 25 and younger, were both featured on the most recent Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Ankur’s father is a successful Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur. Established relationships and a successful track record helped Jain and Wyler raise an undisclosed amount of money in a friends and family round large enough to keep 32 employees humming along for two years in a downtown San Francisco office working on app before it launched. The blockbuster list of early investors include Richard Branson, will.i.am, and Sophia Bush.Knock Knock co-founder Ankur JainImage credit: Knock KnockRelated: ‘Owning’ a Room, Even When You Don’t Feel That You CanThe app is currently free, but down the line there will be a premium version of the app with additional services available for a fee. Also, the data that Knock Knock will collect about each user is valuable; while the team wouldn’t expound further on the specifics of a revenue model, you can slice and dice that kind of information in a lot of profitable ways. Before today’s public launch, Knock Knock had a couple thousand beta users with nearly 60,000 users on the waitlist. The Knock Knock team will roll out the app to college campuses first, a-la Facebook. First up will be Harvard, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Berkeley, and USC.Deja vu? The tapping concept associated with Knock Knock may ring a bell. That bell may well be Bump, an app that allowed people to swap contact information and share files by tapping their phones against one another. Google acquired Bump in September of 2013 and then promptly shut it down a few short months later, with Bump CEO David Lieb saying the team was “deeply focused on our new projects within Google.”Jain and Wyler aren’t phased by the Bump shutdown. They say that where Bump was basically a digital replacement for a business card, Knock Knock is about facilitating smart social networking. “We are trying to build an augmented memory, who you are with, where you met them, when you met them, without even taking your phone out of your pocket. The contact sharing element is a function of what lets you stay in touch, it is not the primary purpose,” says Jain. Where Bump was used exclusively for sharing files and contact information, Knock Knock wants you to use the app to remind you why and how you know people and when they are nearby.Whether or not it will be successful depends, though, on whether the gesture “knocking” technology actually works consistently and smoothly. Nobody wants to be repeatedly hitting their phone at a party as they are trying to get the app to connect — that actually undermines the whole “take out the awkwardness” sell. The success of the app will also depend on whether the team can get a critical mass of users. Even the most gorgeously designed and seamlessly functioning social network is pretty much useless if there are only a small group of friends in San Francisco using it.Related: How to Host an Incredible Networking Dinner Register Now » Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
What is Odoo? Odoo is an all-in-one management software that offers a range of business applications. It forms a complete suite of enterprise management applications targeting companies of all sizes. It is versatile in the sense that it can be used across multiple categories including CRM, website, e-commerce, billing, accounting, manufacturing, warehouse, and project management, and inventory. The community version is free-of-charge and can be installed with ease. Odoo is one of the fastest growing open source, business application development software products available. With the announcement of version 11 of Odoo, there are many new features added to Odoo and the face of business application development with Odoo has changed. In Odoo 11, the online installation documentation continues to improve and there are now options for Docker installations. In addition, Odoo 11 uses Python 3 instead of Python 2.7. This will not change the steps you take in installing Odoo but will change the specific libraries that will be installed. While much of the process is the same as previous versions of Odoo, there have been some pricing changes in Odoo 11. There are only two free users now and you pay for additional users. There is one free application that you can install for an unlimited number of users, but as soon as you have more than one application, then you must pay $25 for each user, including the first user. If you have thought about developing in Odoo, now is the best time to start. Before I convince you on why Odoo is great, let’s take a step back and revisit our fundamentals. What is an ERP? ERP is an acronym often used for Enterprise Resource Planning. The ERP gives a global and real-time view of data that can enable companies to address concerns and drive improvements. It automates the core business operations such as the order to fulfillment and procures to pay processes. It also reduces risk management for companies and enhances customer services by providing a single source for billing and relationship tracking. Why Odoo? Odoo is Extensible and easy to customize Odoo’s framework was built with extensibility in mind. Extensions and modifications can be implemented as modules, to be applied over the module with the feature being changed, without actually changing it. This provides a clean and easy-to-control and customized applications. You get integrated information Instead of distributing data throughout several separate databases, Odoo maintains a single location for all the data. Moreover, the data remains consistent and up to date. Single reporting system Odoo has a unified and single reporting system to analyze and track the status. Users can also run their own reports without any help from IT. Single reporting systems, such as those provided by Odoo ERP software helps make reporting easier and customizable. Built around Python Odoo is built using the Python programming language, which is one of the most popular languages used by developers. Large community The capability to combine several modules into feature-rich applications, along with the open source nature of Odoo, is probably the important factors explaining the community that has grown around Odoo. In fact, there are thousands of community modules available for Odoo, covering virtually every topic, and the number of people getting involved has been steadily growing every year. Go through our video, Odoo 11 development essentials to learn to scaffold a new module, create new models, and use the proper functions that make Odoo 11 the best ERP out there. On Tuesday, Red Hat announced the general availability of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 7.6. RHEL 7.6 is a consistent hybrid cloud foundation for enterprise IT. It is built on an open source innovation, designed to enable organizations to match the pace with emerging cloud-native technologies. It also supports IT operations across enterprise IT’s four footprints. Just three months back the beta version of RHEL 7.6 was released. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6 addresses a range of IT challenges, emphasizes security and compliance, management and automation, and Linux container innovations. Features in RHEL 7.6 RHEL 7.6 solves security concerns IT security has always been a key challenge for many IT departments as it does not get easier in complex hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6 is the answer to this problem as it introduces a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 hardware modules as part of Network Bound Disk Encryption (NBDE). NBDE provides security across networked environments whereas, TPM works on-premise to add an additional layer of security, tying disks to specific physical systems. These two layers of security for hybrid cloud operations help keep information on disks physically more secure. RHEL 7.6 also makes it easier to manage firewalls with improvements to nftables, a packet filtering framework. It also simplifies the configuration of counter-intrusion measures. Updated cryptographic algorithms delivered for RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC) are enabled by default with RHEL 7.6. This helps the organizations handling sensitive information to match their pace with Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliance and standards bodies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Management and automation get better Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6 helps in making Linux adoption easier for the users as it brings enhancements to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Web Console, which provides a graphical overview of Red Hat system health and status. RHEL 7.6 has made it easier to find updates on the system summary page. It also provides automated configuration of single sign-on for identity management and a firewall control interface. This makes it easier for security administrators. RHEL 7.6 comes with the Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF), which provides a safer and efficient mechanism for monitoring activities within the kernel. Soon, it will help in enabling additional performance monitoring and network tracing tools. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6 also provides support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Roles which is a collection of Ansible modules. These modules are designed to provide a consistent way to automate and remotely manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments. Each of these modules provides a ready-made automated workflow for handling common and complex tasks, involved in Linux environments. This automation helps to remove the possibilities of human error from these tasks. This, in turn, frees up the IT teams and lets them focus more on adding business value. Red Hat’s lightweight container toolkit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6 supports the rise of cloud-native technologies by introducing Red Hat’s lightweight container toolkit. This toolkit comprises of CRI-O, Buildah, Skopeo, and now Podman. Each of these tools is built on a fully open source and community-backed technologies. They are based on open standards like the Open Container Initiative (OCI) format. Podman complements Buildah and Skopeo while sharing the same foundations as CRI-O. It enables users to run containers and groups of containers (pods) from a familiar command-line interface, which eliminates the need of a daemon. This, in turn, helps to reduce the complexity in container creation while making it easier for developers to build containers on workstations, in continuous integration/continuous development (CI/CD) systems and within high-performance computing (HPC) or big data scheduling systems.
