RIO 2016Olawale Ajimotokan in AbujaDream Team VI Head Coach, Samson Siasia, has submitted his programme for the Rio 2016 Olympic football event after his adventure with the Super Eagles failed to qualify Nigeriafor next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. The coach, whose fate will be tabled before the expanded meeting of the board of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung today, told reporters that his Olympic blueprint incorporated proposal for friendly matches to be played with Columbia and Honduras. If ratified by NFF, the matches will he played in Brazil, where Nigeria will camp for one month after an extensive training in Europe.Siasia said he planned to open a training camp in Nigeria with a legion of home-based players as soon as the federation approves his programme.“We will go into camp with some home-based players the moment we get the green light from the federation. The exercise will allow us assess the boys to determine if some of them can be included in the final 23-man squad for the Olympic Games. We hope to camp in Europe and spend one month in Brazil, where we will play friendly matches with Honduras and Colombia,” Siasia stressed. While he was away as the caretaker coach of the Eagles, Fatai Amoo was put in charge of the U-23 team which stunned Brazil 1-0 in a friendly match, organised by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) at the Estadio Kieber Andrade in Caciacica Vittoria.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram

In Salazar’s absence, the two played together at No. 1 doubles in three matches.“I think that we have game styles that work well with each other,” Ramirez said. “I think we complement each other while we’re on the court.”Ramirez pointed to their attacking styles as effective. When one plays an aggressive shot, the other can take advantage by winning the point at the net. Syracuse will need its healthy players to do their part to win matches, regardless of the spot they end up playing in.Both Knutson and Limam have said the players on SU are “versatile,” and can play with one another in various combinations. Not limited to specific lineups, Limam can choose his spots on a match-by-match basis.“We don’t really pay attention much to the numbers, one, two, three,” Limam said. “The good news is we have enough depth to go out there and try to get four points against any team, and that’s the mentality we need to have moving forward.”Salazar already missing time this season forced Knutson to learn how to play with a different partner. That experience will help her now as the team moves forward without Salazar.“I kind of trying to implement what I learned with her (Salazar), and try to put that into doubles with somebody else,” Knutson said. “So kind of like the little things that we, different small things that we did to kind of make us more in sync, I definitely try to do that with other doubles partners.”It has yet to be decided who Knutson’s partner will be in the first doubles pairing. The team has seven healthy players, six of whom will play doubles. Whoever is playing the best each week will determine the matchups.“I definitely think that we can play as well without her (Salazar),” Knutson said. “… We just have to make it work.”— Asst. copy editor Andrew Graham contributed reporting to this story Comments Gabriela Knutson isn’t the only player who needs to step up this season. Syracuse’s temporary-No. 1 singles player will try to partner with freshman Miranda Ramirez to make up for the loss of Valeria Salazar.Last week, Syracuse head coach Younes Limam said Salazar, a senior, would miss the rest of the season due to a right wrist injury. Salazar had paired with Knutson to form one of the Top 10 doubles teams in the country. As of Feb. 8, she ranked No. 54 at singles, Syracuse’s highest-ranked player. With Salazar out, Syracuse (1-4, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) looks mainly to Knutson and Ramirez to step up.

A hand ful of spectators at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. While the nineteenth edition of the Commonwealth Games kicked off on a ‘spectacular’ note, the follow up hasn’t been that impressive. This time, it’s the people of the host city who have been left high and dry after they were unable to get tickets for the sporting venues. In comparison to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which was buzzing with over 60,000 spectators at the opening ceremony on Sunday evening, the audience response at the competition venues thereafter has been embarrassingly tepid. On the face of it, the empty stands could be blamed on lack of enthusiasm on part of Delhiites. But Delhiites couldn’t disagree more.Several spectators who managed a ticket to different venues on Tuesday said that they did so with much difficulty. “Online booking, which is one of the most convenient ways to get a ticket, does not seem to be functioning properly.Every time I tried to get a ticket for the wrestling (for Tuesday), the website kept showing some error or the other,” said Maithali Gupta (18), who has come to Delhi from Hyderabad to watch the Games specially. She finally bought her ticket at the venue.A top Indian shooter, who has an event on Wednesday, is finding it hard to organise a ticket for his mother, who has flown in to Delhi to watch her son perform at the Karni Singh shooting range.”There are no tickets available at the venue. What they are saying here is that tickets are available online,” said another shooter.advertisementWhen Mail Today checked the website, tickets for Wednesday for the shooting range had been sold out. “It’s complicated. Outside they tell us the tickets have been sold out. Inside the venues, many of the seats are lying vacant. Then where are the tickets,” questioned another shooter.Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell pointed out that low spectator turnout at the venues was a cause of concern. At some events, the crowd was outnumbered by the teams and security personnel.”We are working with the OC on how to fill the venues. Both athletes and the organisers want the venues to be full,” Fennell said.CWG OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi assured that steps are being taken to bring in more people to the stadia.”We are working on it. We are planning to bring in schoolchildren and even those from the poorer families to watch the matches. I am sure the problem would now be managing the crowd.”On Tuesday, for instance, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, the venues for wrestling and cycling, looked lifeless with occupancy standing at less than half during most part of the day. When Mail Today did a spot check at the KD Jadhav Wrestling stadium around 4.40 pm, there were barely a thousand people in the stands, which can accommodate 6,932 people. In fact the number of the media persons and volunteers almost equalled that of the wrestlers. This, ironically, was the response of Delhiites when there was an Indian contestant in each of the three final rounds for the gold medal in Greco- Roman style of wrestling.Though at the gymnastics venue, the number of spectators seemed more encouraging, it still wasn’t enough to fill up half of the capacity of the stadium. The occupancy, in fact, stood at about 40 per cent just before the final round of the day was about to kick off.
