Bunco to fight cancer

first_imgThe bunco tournament is in its second year at the Contours Express in La Habra. Last year, the event raised $1,000. Gym employees are hoping to surpass that amount during this year’s event. Joanie Payne has worked as a trainer at Contours for two years. She said the success of the business and the fundraisers depends on the community of women who belong to the gym. “We’re a personal gym,” Payne said. “You don’t have to worry about looking like a perfect eight or 10.” For JoAnn Lutkus, the fight against breast cancer is personal. She lost her mother to the disease 17 years ago and has an aunt undergoing chemotherapy to treat it. “I’m behind this 100 percent, whatever we can do for women,” she said. The relationship between the Contours Express company, which includes 600 franchises in 20 countries, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation began last year. “Last year they came to us,” Marketing Associate Julie Orchier said. “This is really a Contours effort itself.” The company has raised more than $108,000 for the foundation in the past year. More is expected in the year to come. “The franchise owners are really going beyond just the programs that are set out for them,” Orchier said. Participating in fundraisers is optional for individual franchises. JoAnn Lutkus and her daughter-in-law took over the existing franchise in May and jumped into the company’s charity work quickly, raising support in the community by asking La Habra businesses to donate gift baskets as prizes for events. The pair also decided to underwrite the events out of pocket, paying for all snacks and supplies needed for bunco, bingo, the open house and any other events they may sponsor. “This is just something we wanted to do, so that they will find a cure for this deadly disease,” JoAnn Lutkus said. For information on how to support the fundraisers or how to obtain a membership to Contours Express, call (562) 690-0550. The bunco tournament is just one of several activities planned by franchise owners Stacie and JoAnn Lutkus to support women and women’s issues through their business, an all-female gym that provides circuit training and weight training. “This is a cause dedicated to women,” JoAnn Lutkus said. “I don’t think there is a woman out there who doesn’t have a friend or family member or someone they know who the disease has hit.” JoAnn Lutkus said she and her daughter-in-law plan to host more events to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in the coming months, with an open house on Oct. 5, where women can come to try out the gym and its equipment. They can also pledge their workout to breast cancer and make donations to the foundation. Later in the month, the gym will host a bingo night to raise money for the foundation. LA HABRA – Women here are hoping to beat breast cancer with bunco. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Contours Express in La Habra will host Bunco for Breast Cancer, the proceeds of which benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, dedicated to finding new treatments for breast cancer. Admission to the event costs $20. This admission will include snacks and unlimited bunco, a dice game. About half of the ticket price will go to prizes for the event, while the rest of the money goes directly to the foundation. last_img read more
