Several individuals, groups, institutions and organizations were invited to attend the Symposium including magistrate Gloria Augustus, Opposition leader Hector John, Member of Parliament for the Roseau Central Constituency Norris Prevost, Health Minister Julius Timothy, Community Development Minister Gloria Shillingford to discuss and develop a National Plan of Action to reduce violence and its impact on the society. CariMAN’s president Thomas Holmes explained that the idea for the Symposium was born out of a brain storming session among group members to determine ways in which they could pull their resources together in an effort to help the country. He noted that among the ideas were tackling the negative impact of drugs on the island, finding ways to raise men’s awareness to their health and violence.Holmes reported that CariMAN embarked upon violence as “because it is destroying our people, destroying our land. We see this pain inflicting activity as one that is having a very negative impact on the very fabric of our society; everyone is affected by violence many of our boys, young men and men are involved in it”.CariMAN’s goal he continued; “Is to see Dominicans living in love, in harmony, respecting each other, appreciating and celebrating our success and achievement. Violence is a hindrance to all of these”.According to Holmes, “people are angry, they go to bed angry and wake up with a “double dose of anger, violence and disrespect when we hear what certain people have to say about us and others”. At work, at home and within society Holmes believes there is intense anger and frustration exhibited which can also lead to violent behaviors.“At the work place, we behave like crabs in the barrel. Friendship and gossip lavish and professionalism is not yet born for many of us. Our behavior and attitude sometimes lead to violence and violation of the human rights of others. We are like strangers in our homes, our homes are becoming like hotels; we check in, we check out. No time to sit down and enjoy each other’s company, we do not talk with each other”.Holmes believes that violence is “flourishing” because there is a lack of “positive role models, respected and trustworthy men and boys”.“Violence is flourishing because we curse more and we love less, we forget the children and youth who are neglected, abandoned, rejected, and afflicted; they become violent when we do not help them. Sometime, the only way out for them, the only way of survival is the path of violence and destruction”.He proposed that society need to “guide, protect and teach” the youth in an effort to reduce the rate of crime and violent behavior among them.“It is time that we take back our country from the brink of disaster and give it back to God, let him bless it; let him work in our land together with us. Let us come together and work for a Dominica free from fear and violence. Boys and men of Dominica; let us come together and reject violence, let us join with the girls and women and reject all types of violence”. Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more
